Daredevil fundraisers braved new heights for Yorkshire Cancer Research when they completed a 30 metre abseil from the top of the Portland Building at Leeds Beckett University.
32 employees from organisations across West Yorkshire took part in the corporate challenge, raising thousands of pounds to help more people in Yorkshire survive cancer.
Among the participants were eight members of staff from Leeds-based global law firm Squire Patton Boggs, who brought four family members and friends along with them.
The team has raised close to £4,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research through sponsorship for completing the abseil.
Mark Simpson, partner at Squire Patton Boggs and chair of the firm’s charity committee, said: “The prospect of abseiling down the Portland Building was daunting for many in the Squire Patton Boggs team but we were all determined to do it. Everyone came away thrilled that they had taken part and raised so much for Yorkshire Cancer Research, our Leeds office charity for 2017.”
Other organisations that took part include Eastwood Financial Services, who entered a team of five and raised more than £1,500, and the Ministry of Justice.

We were therefore delighted to be able to offer our support by taking part in this event, which was very enjoyable and very well organised. It was also a great experience for our team of five and we are all very proud of our achievements and also our fundraising efforts.”
Stephanie Jones, Corporate Partnerships Officer at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “The Yorkshire Abseil Challenge was a great event. Bringing supporters together to lower themselves off a building was quite an experience and the fundraising has been incredible. Thank you to everyone who got involved. The money raised will help the charity raise awareness of cancer and how to prevent it, promote screening programmes and fund innovative research, from diagnosis to end-of-life care.”
