LampShopOnline chooses Yorkshire Cancer Research as Charity of the Year

West Yorkshire lighting specialist LampShopOnline has chosen Yorkshire Cancer Research as its charity of the year.

Staff at the Garforth-based business, which supplies bulbs and lamps from all major brands, will organise and take part in a variety of fundraising activities, from bake sales to the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.

Employees recently held their first bake sale in the office to celebrate the start of their fundraising. Following an exhibition in Coventry, the business also donated 5% of all product sales to the charity.

Yorkshire Cancer Research is dedicated to improving cancer outcomes in Yorkshire by raising awareness of cancer and how to prevent it, promoting screening programmes and funding innovative research, from diagnosis to end-of-life care.

During the partnership the charity will provide health checks for staff, which aim to encourage healthy lifestyles, improve knowledge of cancer signs and symptoms and increase participation in screening.

Rob Holroyd, said: “Reaching out to Yorkshire Cancer Research to show our local support has had a great impact on our staff. The interest and enthusiasm shown to contributing to this fantastic charity has given us a way of engaging with our staff as we come up with fundraising ideas. We are looking forward to 2018 where we will continue to build a solid profile together and hopefully continue our contributions.”

Stephanie Jones, Corporate Partnerships Officer at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “We’re delighted that LampShopOnline has chosen to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research. The staff are eager to get involved in all kinds of different activities and we’re sure that with their enthusiasm and commitment they will raise vital funds for the charity’s work. As an independent, regional charity we rely heavily on the support businesses like LampShopOnline.”

Notes to Editors

  • Harrogate-based Yorkshire Cancer Research was founded in 1925 and is the largest independent regional cancer charity in England (Registered Charity 516898). We are not part of a national charity.
  • We are committed to reducing the devastating impact of cancer on the lives of people living in Yorkshire.
  • Our mission is to work in partnership, fund research and support initiatives that will help people in Yorkshire avoid, survive and cope with cancer.
  • Current statistics show that 565 people are diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire every week. Incidence and mortality rates are higher than the England average due to social deprivation, post-industrialisation and lifestyle choices but also availability of healthcare services and difficulties accessing early diagnostics, clinical trials and the latest treatments.
  • We aim to:
    • Be the leading authority on cancer in Yorkshire, understanding the problems and priorities in the region and sharing knowledge with partners.
    • Raise awareness of cancer and how to prevent it by working in local communities, schools and colleges, sports clubs and with other health-related organisations.
    • Promote screening programmes and fund research that can improve the diagnosis of cancer so we can detect and treat it at the earliest opportunity.
    • Invest in innovative research projects at every stage of a cancer patient’s journey.
    • Campaign for fair and equal access to the very best healthcare services and a greater share of the money spent nationally on research.
