Leeds surgeon to take on coast-to-coast challenge for Yorkshire Cancer Research

A consultant surgeon from St James’s University Hospital, Leeds, will cycle the width of the country this weekend to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Sunjay Jain, a bladder cancer surgeon at the hospital, will begin his 140-mile challenge on Friday, July 28, in Whitehaven, Cumbria.
The coast-to-coast journey will take him through the hills and valleys of the Lake District and the Pennines before he officially finishes the ride by dipping his wheel in the North Sea at Tynemouth.

Regional charity Yorkshire Cancer Research, which is dedicated to improving cancer outcomes in the county, funds a research nurse in Sunjay’s department, who is responsible for recruiting patients into clinical trials and running a support group.

Sunjay said: “I’ve seen first-hand the fantastic work that Yorkshire Cancer Research funds. It seemed obvious that as I was doing this challenge I should try and raise some money for such a worthwhile cause.”

Sunjay, who lives in Horsforth, added: “I enjoy cycling for the fresh air and scenery but I’ve never done anything like this before. The route is amazing. I’m looking forward to the great views and the sense of achievement at the end – but I’m not looking forward to the climbs.”

Patsy Robertshaw, Head of Relationships at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “We’d like to wish Sunjay the very best of luck with his coast to coast bike ride this weekend. We love to see our researchers and healthcare professionals raising money for the charity and can’t wait to hear how he gets on.

“The money raised will help us save lives in Yorkshire by raising awareness of cancer and how to prevent it, promoting screening programmes and funding innovative research projects, from diagnosis to end-of-life care.”

Notes to Editors

  • Harrogate-based Yorkshire Cancer Research was founded in 1925 and is the largest independent regional cancer charity in England (Registered Charity 516898). We are not part of a national charity.
  • We are committed to reducing the devastating impact of cancer on the lives of people living in Yorkshire.
  • Our mission is to work in partnership, fund research and support initiatives that will help people in Yorkshire avoid, survive and cope with cancer.
  • Current statistics show that 565 people are diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire every week. Incidence and mortality rates are higher than the England average due to social deprivation, post-industrialisation and lifestyle choices but also availability of healthcare services and difficulties accessing early diagnostics, clinical trials and the latest treatments.
  • We aim to:
    • Be the leading authority on cancer in Yorkshire, understanding the problems and priorities in the region and sharing knowledge with partners.
    • Raise awareness of cancer and how to prevent it by working in local communities, schools and colleges, sports clubs and with other health-related organisations.
    • Promote screening programmes and fund research that can improve the diagnosis of cancer so we can detect and treat it at the earliest opportunity.
    • Invest in innovative research projects at every stage of a cancer patient’s journey.
    • Campaign for fair and equal access to the very best healthcare services and a greater share of the money spent nationally on research.
