Active Beyond Cancer Programme Set to Start in September

Date: 21 August 2018

The Active Beyond Cancer programme, which is run in partnership with Leeds Rhinos Foundation and Yorkshire Cancer Research, will begin again in September for men and women affected by cancer.

The free rehabilitation programme offers health sessions in a range of locations across Leeds and is available to people at any stage of their cancer treatment.  The course aims to aid participants by increasing fitness levels, improving their quality of life and building confidence, which are all areas that are known to decrease after cancer diagnosis.

People interested in joining the course are invited to attend one of the Tea and Talk events at the end of August to find out more about what is involved and to speak to staff from Leeds Rhinos Foundation who will be running the course.

Following consultations, the free 12-week Active Beyond Cancer courses will begin in September and will run at three venues across Leeds. The sessions not only include physical exercise but also offer help and advice to attendees, looking at finances and creating a positive well being.  After completion of the course there will be a celebration evening at OPAL for all that participated in the programme.

Adam Lunn, projects officer and exercise referral specialist at Leeds Rhinos Foundation who co-ordinates the Active Beyond Cancer programme, said: “Since we launched the Active Beyond Cancer programme we have supported over 90 clients who have been diagnosed with cancer.  Individuals who have attended the programme have reported; reduction in their levels of fatigue, increased energy levels and being more physically active on a regular basis. One of the great things about the programme, is the organic peer support network that develops as a result of weekly group discussions and varied physical activity sessions.

“Research shows that achieving 30-minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per day can help reduce the risk of reoccurrence of certain cancer types by up to 50 per cent as well as prevent other long-term health conditions. The Active Beyond Cancer programme enables clients to receive the right support to taking part in physical activity, safely and effectively.
