Hebden Bridge Rotary Club Donates £1,000 to Yorkshire Cancer Research

29 May 2019

Large crowds gather every Easter Monday in Hebden Bridge to cheer on 10,000 plastic ducks as they race down Hebden Water.

The town’s Rotary Club organises the annual spectacle and has done so every year since 2000. Combined with the proceeds from their annual Vintage Weekend car show they have funded more than £225,000 of charitable works in the last four years alone - across Yorkshire, the UK and around the world.

Flood relief, shelter boxes, polio eradication, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, local schools and hospices, guide dogs for the blind and a multitude of other good causes have been supported in the past and now Yorkshire Cancer Research has been added to the long list of beneficiaries.

After hearing about the charity’s ground-breaking lung screening project at a recent meeting, club members have given £1,000 in support.

GPs across the city are inviting people who smoke, or used to smoke, to take part in lung checks which include a CT scan

The Leeds Lung Health Check is a multi-million pound initiative developed in partnership with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, the University of Leeds and Leeds City Council.

GPs across the city are inviting people who smoke, or used to smoke, to take part in lung health checks which include a special type of x-ray called a CT scan that can detect very early signs of lung cancer. Lung cancer is Yorkshire’s most common cancer. If cancer is found at an early stage, treatment options and the chances of survival are greater.

The checks are carried out in a mobile unit which moves to different locations in Leeds to make it easier for people to take part.

The project began in November 2018 and so far more than 1,300 people have been scanned. About 7,000 people are expected to take part overall.

In addition to lung screening, the project is also offering support to smokers who take part in a lung health check and would like help with quitting the habit.

We are very grateful to all the members of Hebden Bridge Rotary Club for their generous support.
