Leeds Kirkgate Market ‘gives it some welly’ for Yorkshire Cancer Research in world’s biggest virtual welly wang

Date: 31 July 2020

Leeds Kirkgate Market is joining Yorkshire Cancer Research in its attempt to set a new world record for the most wellies wanged in an hour this Yorkshire Day (Saturday 1st August) to help raise funds to save more lives in Yorkshire.

The world record attempt will take place as part of the charity’s annual fundraising campaign, ‘Give It Some Welly’, which was launched earlier this month to raise vital funds to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the region.

In celebration of the campaign, the charity is encouraging people across the region to take part in the ‘world’s biggest virtual welly wang’, which will be hosted on Facebook between 2-3pm on Yorkshire Day

The new record being attempted is ‘the most videos of people throwing wellington boots uploaded in one hour on Facebook’ and the charity needs 250 people to take part and upload their videos to be successful in setting the record.

Leeds Kirkgate Market will be joining Yorkshire Cancer Research in its world record attempt by asking traders and customers to film themselves wanging a welly and uploading the footage to the charity’s dedicated Facebook event page within the one-hour timeframe.

The welly wanging fun will take place in the outdoor market area between 2 and 3pm and social distancing guidelines and safety measures will be followed.

Participants are being asked to make a donation for every welly they wang to help the charity reach its goal of raising £10m this year so more people in Yorkshire can ‘give cancer the boot’ for good.

Councillor Asghar Khan, Leeds City Council's deputy executive member with responsibility for markets, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Yorkshire Cancer Research with their welly wanging world record attempt this Yorkshire Day. As one of the region’s leading indoor markets we are very proud of our Yorkshire heritage so Yorkshire Day is always a big celebration for us. With charities being so affected during the pandemic we decided this year that we would support Yorkshire Cancer Research to help the charity raise vital funds and smash a new world record as part of our Yorkshire Day celebrations.  We’re encouraging traders and customers to get involved between 2 and 3pm on Yorkshire Day on the outdoor market at Leeds Kirkgate Market.”

Dr Kathryn Scott, chief executive at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “We’re encouraging people across the region to join our ‘Give it Some Welly’ campaign and help put Yorkshire in the spotlight. All you need is a phone and a welly, and you can be part of a world record attempt by posting your video to our Facebook event page on Yorkshire Day.

“The past few months have been challenging and uncertain for many people, especially those affected by cancer, so the generosity of people in Yorkshire means more than ever before. We’d like our world record attempt to provide some light relief while raising life-changing funds to help minimise the impact of the pandemic on people with cancer in our region.

“With our ambitious target to fund £10 million of world leading research every year to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, we need people in Yorkshire to come together and help more people give cancer the boot for good.”
