Quitting smoking in Yorkshire: what help can I get?

17 October 2019

No matter what age you decide to quit, some of the harm smoking causes to your health will start to reverse immediately. The NHS reports that you're three times as likely to quit with support from your local stop smoking service than by using will power alone.

Yorkshire Smokefree Service - The Yorkshire Smokefree Service is a great starting point if you're looking to quit in South and West Yorkshire. Their website lists stop smoking clinics you can visit for support including locations in Barnsley, Calderdale, Doncaster, Sheffield and Wakefield. Alternatively, if you’re based in the Leeds area please visit One You Leeds.

Smokefree Hull - This East Yorkshire based service offers telephone appointments with a specialist stop smoking advisor. As well as support you will be offered a range of stop smoking aids that are available on prescription such as nicotine patches, gum and Champix.

Living Well North Yorkshire - If you're based in North Yorkshire, support is available from the Living Well Smokefree team provided by North Yorkshire County Council. This service is currently being delivered remotely by a team of advisors who have plenty of experience helping people stop smoking for good.

These advisors support anyone aged 12 and above. You will be offered personalised one-to-one support over 6-12 weeks provided by a dedicated Stop Smoking COnsultant who you'll have regular contact with, and you'll have access to a supply of nicotine replacement products, if you feel this will help.

Stoptober and advice from the NHS - Looking for that extra push? Join Stoptober and stay smokefree for the whole of October along with thousands of others in the same boat as you. Download the Stoptober App to track your progress and get daily support. Research shows that you're five times more likely to quit if you manage 28 days of Stoptober without giving in.

The NHS website is your one-stop shop for all things related to stopping smoking. There’s an option to create your own free personal quit plan and you can use this site to link up with more local stop smoking services. The site also tells you what types of nicotine replacement products you can get on prescription through the NHS and how to go about this.

Breathe 2025 -  Looking for motivation? Make a pledge with Breathe 2025 to stop smoking for good and inspire the next generation to remain smokefree. Data examined by Breathe 2025 reveals that if a young person does not start smoking by age 26, they almost certainly never will in the future. They want to encourage people to help them achieve their vision of a smokefree generation by 2025.
