Team #BenNevs Scale UK’s Highest Peak for Yorkshire Cancer Research

Date: 20 September 2019

Clear skies welcomed a group of Yorkshire friends to the peak of the highest mountain in the British Isles earlier this month.

Sarah Goldthorpe, Acting Editor at BBC Look North, hiked 1,345m to the top of Ben Nevis with five other women to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

The ‘Team #BenNevs’ group was treated to a rare clear run up to the mountain’s summit, which is usually shrouded in mist for an average of 355 days a year.

They raised an incredible £1,630 in memory of loved ones lost to the disease and in tribute to those left behind.

Sarah, who was joined by friends Lisa Machen, Lisa Jackson, Ruth Tomlinson, Geraldine Sykes and Steph Shonk, said: “We decided to take on Ben Nevis for everyone touched by cancer because it’s the greatest challenge facing our health service right now and to help that fight we need research.

“It was just the most incredible day of my life. The weather was perfect. We hiked in memory of those we’ve lost, and fundraised for research into cancer for patients in the future. I was so glad to share the experience with an amazing group of girls - and dogs. It was unforgettable.”

Friend Steph Shonk added: “Going up gave me a few hours of peace and quiet to reflect and take in the beautiful scenery. We were so lucky to have chosen one of the few days with clear visibility. It was a challenging and emotional day but I gave it my everything. We are all so very proud to say for just a moment we were the highest people in the UK as we stood on that trig point.”

Juliet Glendinning, Director of Brand and Relationships at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “Congratulations to Team #BenNevs on an incredible achievement. We’re grateful to every member of the team for showing true Yorkshire grit and completing an extremely tough challenge for Yorkshire Cancer Research. The money raised will go towards funding vital research and services to help more people in Yorkshire survive cancer.”
