Yorkshire Cancer Research comes to Selby with new charity shop

People in Selby can shop and donate to support pioneering cancer research in Yorkshire, thanks to the opening of a new Yorkshire Cancer Research store in the heart of the town. 

Set in the bustling Market Cross shopping centre and around the corner from iconic Selby Abbey, the shop offers a rich collection of new and pre-loved treasures from clothing and accessories to books, homeware and media.

The Yorkshire Cancer Research team in Selby invites people to donate high-quality new and used goods, so more people can shop sustainably and give items a new lease of life. 

As part of its mission to save lives in Yorkshire, Yorkshire Cancer Research aims to have a presence on every high street in the region. The new shop in Selby is expected to raise £125,000 each year for life-saving cancer research projects, helping Yorkshire Cancer Research to bring more cancer cures to people in the local area and beyond.

In North Yorkshire, around 63 people are told they have cancer every week, Yorkshire Cancer Research is dedicated to changing this. The charity works in partnership with organisations like the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, supporting the latest developments in cancer treatment and research for people in North Yorkshire. 

Pete Wheatstone, from Selby, underwent treatment in York after he was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2014. He’s now a patient representative for FOxTROT 3, a world-leading bowel cancer trial funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research, and helps the charity raise awareness of the benefits of taking part in clinical cancer trials in the region.

He said: “When I saw that Yorkshire Cancer Research was opening a new shop in Selby, I was so pleased. I love being able to help the charity save lives however I can, so I’ll definitely be popping in.”

Vikki Fillingham first joined Yorkshire Cancer Research 12 years ago, working in various roles before her new appointment as Deputy Shop Manager at the Selby shop. She said: “Having lived in the Selby district for over two decades, I’m really fond of our beautiful town and it’s exciting that the charity I’m so proud to be a part of is expanding here. We hope to create a warm, inviting environment that can become a real hub for customers and volunteers alike.”

The Yorkshire Cancer Research store in Selby is open between 9:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Saturday, and 10:30am to 4:30pm on Sundays.
