Together, we are finding new and better ways to save more lives
We fund researchers and cancer experts who pioneer early diagnosis and discover new and better treatments for people with cancer. These life-giving medical breakthroughs are helping more people survive cancer - here in Yorkshire, and beyond. Thanks to supporters, Yorkshire Cancer Research is the biggest funder of cancer research study places for people in Yorkshire, giving greater access to innovative new cancer treatments.
Finding cancer sooner
Earlier diagnosis
Late diagnosis of cancer is a particular problem in Yorkshire, where 4 in 10 cancers are diagnosed at a late stage - well above the national average. We fund vital new screening programmes and research trials to help detect cancer at the earliest possible opportunity when it's easier to treat.
Improving cancer treatments
Innovating radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery
Most people undergoing treatment for cancer will experience surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy - sometimes all of these. We fund world-leading researchers and medical experts to improve these treatments, making them more effective at treating the cancer while minimising the impact on the rest of the body.

Pioneering new cancer services
Cancer exercise rehabilitation
There is growing evidence from across the world that exercise before, during and after cancer treatment can improve the effectiveness of other treatments (such as surgery and chemotherapy), improve long-term survival and lower the chance of cancer coming back.
Preventing cancer
Finding signs of cancer before cancer develops
Genetic screening can show whether someone is at higher risk of developing cancer, giving them the opportunity to act before cancer develops. Some cancer screening – such as cervical cancer screening – can detect pre-cancerous cells. Through research and services like these, we can prevent more people developing cancer.
Cancer awareness
Raising awareness of cancer screening and services
We help people access vital cancer services. For example, some people shy away from cancer screening, often through embarrassment. Others may live in communities who don’t like to talk about cancer. People wanting to quit smoking and reduce their risk of lung cancer, may need help accessing stop smoking services. We help connect people with cancer screening and services that can help save lives.
